2025
VFW Springfield, Virginia Post 7327 commemorated the fourth annual VFW Day of Service on Saturday, 03 May 2025 with our semi-annual highway cleanup. The cleanup was completed along a 2.4-mile portion of the Franconia-Springfield Parkway between Beulah (613) and I-95. This event was sponsored and conducted by VFW Springfield Post 7327 and supported by Franconia District Supervisor Rodney Lusk and his staff, the Fairfax County Police Department, and three local high schools (West Springfield, John R. Lewis, and Hayfield). The event hosted 65+ volunteers, including 58 students and teachers.
John R. Lewis High School student Faith Kitthanawong was recognized with a VFW Post 7327 Certificate of Appreciation for her efforts in helping plan the event and for coordinating volunteer support across the multiple participating high schools. Over 30 bags of trash and highway debris including vehicle parts and construction materials were collected during the cleanup and permanently removed two days later by VDOT. The assembly location is traditionally on Frontier Blvd near the Springfield Towne Center Mall. Businesses like Pure Hockey generously allow the use of their parking area for assembly and staging.
The highway
cleanup supports the Virginia Adopt-A-Highway program along a section
continuously adopted by VFW Springfield Post 7327 for over a decade; and Post
cleanup projects are traditionally scheduled near significant holidays like
Veterans Day, Memorial Day, Earth Day, and of course the VFW Day of Service
demonstrating our commitment to service. We reported 260 total community
volunteer service hours for this event! The Post members provided support
walking/cleaning the route, rotator vehicles to collect bags and deliver to
collection points, and provided very ample refreshments for every volunteer.
